Ferrous sulfate and folic acid are used to treat iron deficiency anemia (a lack of red blood cells caused by having too little iron in the body). Zinc deficiency alters the circulating levels of a number of hormones associated with the onset of contractions, and due to the fact that zinc is necessary for normal immune function, the deficiency can contribute to the development of systemic and intrauterine infections that cause premature birth.
